Police officials loot passengers at Pune railway station: Six policemen from Pune Railway Police suspended for taking ₹5 lakh from two passengers

However, a shocking incident has come to light at Pune railway station. Six policemen from Pune Railway Police have been immediately suspended for dereliction of duty while checking the baggage of travellers. They include four policemen from Pune Railway Police and two policemen from Pune Railway LCB Police. Action has been taken against the guilty policemen but what about those officials who had appointed these policemen for checking baggage? (Pune Crime News)
When Pune Railway police station, control room and concerned officials were contacted to get details about the incident, evasive answers were given. What is surprising is contact numbers of concerned officials are not available in the control room of Pune Railway Police. We can only think about the treatment being given to passengers and complainants when the names of senior officials are mentioned in large letters but their contact numbers are not available.
The suspended policemen have been identified as API Balu Patole (LCB, Pune Railway Police), Police Constable Sunil Vatkar (LCB, Pune Railway Police), Prashant Bajrang Doiphode from Pune Railway police station, Jayant Ganpat Randive, Amol Yuvraj Sonvane and Vishal Dattatray Gosavi.
According to information available from sources, the six suspended policemen had been appointed on April 3 to check the baggage of passengers. At 1 pm, the police stopped a youth and a girl on grounds of suspicion. The answers given by them were found unsatisfactory. Hence, the police produced them before the police inspector. At 7 pm, the youth and the girl were let off.
A note was made in the station diary. Meanwhile, DGP (Railway Police, Mumbai) informed senior officials of Pune Railway Police that the policemen took ₹5 lakh from the youth and the girl and they had been stopped on the suspicion of carrying ganja.
The information made available from the DGP office was shocking and policemen and officials of Pune Railway Police police station were in a quandary. The concerned officials started an enquiry on the instructions issued by senior officials. The CCTV footage of Pune railway station was examined. Some things were found suspicious. Later, six policemen were immediately suspended.
Question arises as to how the policemen took such a big amount of money from the passengers. Although, there is an entry in the station diary, the question remains about who guided these policemen. It is also surprising that how the suspended policemen and some policemen were given the task of checking the baggage of passengers year after year? The policemen were suspended for their irresponsible behaviour which tarnished the image of the police department.
An FIR about robbery is registered against two of the suspended policemen. It is puzzling as to how these policemen were given the task of checking the bags of passengers. This incident has highlighted the fact that the functioning of the Pune Railway Police railway station is chaotic. Officials stationed at the Pune Railway Police station don’t even know who is in charge of the station and the contact number is also not available. Some senior officials have gone for training and some are on leave and since some posts are vacant, additional responsibility has been given to some officials. Officials at the Control Room are in the dark about these officials and they do not have their contact numbers.
Lakhs of passengers go to Pune railway station for travelling to various destinations. However, this is not the first time that such an incident has happened.
In June 2021, Sr PI and seven others from Pune Railway Police railway station had been suspended for their irresponsible behaviour. Seven of them were later dismissed from service.
However, this incident proves that police officials continue to indulge in such irresponsible behaviour. Hence, it is necessary that senior police officers to take immediate steps to prevent such incidents.
