Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) | Road Neglect: Pune Municipal Corporation’s Failure to Restore Dug-Up Roadways

Pune: Policenama online  – Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) | The onset of monsoon in Pune has highlighted the dismal condition of the city’s roadways, exposing the tall claims made by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) regarding monsoon preparedness. Residents are particularly frustrated with the negligent attitude of the city body and other authorities in restoring roadways that were dug up for cable installation, causing inconvenience and hazards for commuters.

One such instance can be witnessed in Aundh, where the road in front of Green Park Society has become a daily nightmare for commuters. The PMC authorized Maha Metro to dig up the road for the installation of high-tension wires. However, upon completion of the work, the road was left in a hazardous state, filled with debris and mud. The ongoing heavy rainfall has further worsened the situation, while the local authority has turned a blind eye to the matter.

Residents of the society recount the evening of June 2 when Maha Metro excavators arrived at the road. The contractor presented only a handwritten letter as a work order, which the residents opposed. The construction continued until midnight, leaving the residents trapped in their houses. The excavation also damaged the gate of a social bungalow. To make matters worse, the workers left the dug-up road filled with rubbish and muck, posing a significant risk to commuters.

Mona Dahibhate, a resident of the complex, expressed her daily struggle, saying, “I have to drop my son off at his bus stop every morning. We used to walk down the road, but the current conditions have made it difficult and dangerous. Numerous incidents of people tripping on this poorly restored route have forced my in-laws to cease their walks. If the authorities dig up the road, it is their responsibility to rebuild it and make it safe for commuting.”

The incident in Aundh highlights a larger problem of negligence and lack of accountability on the part of the PMC and other concerned authorities. It raises questions about the efficiency of road restoration practices and the overall preparedness for the monsoon season. Residents across the city are now urging the PMC to take immediate action in restoring the dug-up roadways, ensuring safe and commutable routes for the public

“The road was dug up by our people,” said PMRDA executive engineer Raju Thange, he continued, “but the tarring work could not be completed due to rains. It will not be completed before the monsoon.”

“Commuters and residents will have to suffer for a couple of months,” he added, adding, “But, for the time being, if residents have any concerns, we can ensure that the road is safe by removing the slug and mud.”
