At present, there is a shortage of smart cards in RTOs in the state. Citizens are being forced to wait for two months to get their licence and registration smart cards. Hence, the Transport Department has ended the agreement made with the earlier companies and signed an agreement with Manipal Technologies, a company based in Karnataka. This company is going to print smart cards from August 21 and till then, the earlier companies will be printing the smart cards.

The facility of printing details on smart cards will be available at only Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad. Since Pune has been excluded, this has created a lot of uproar. Congress MLA Ravindra Dhangekar had raised this issue in the Legislative Assembly. Many organisations in Pune had also campaigned on this issue but Pune has not been selected for printing of smart cards.

Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanvar said, “It is the company right where it wants to print smart cards. As per its convenience, it has decided to carry out printing at Mumbai, Nagpur and Aurangabad. The Transport Department has not interfered in the selection of these cities. Irrespective of where the smart cards are printed, residents of the state will get the smart cards by Speed Post at their residence. The chemical testing of the new smart card has been completed and its printing will begin from August 21.

Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanvar said, “The responsibility of printing smart cards wrests with the company and it has selected three places of their convenience. Every year, the state needs 40 to 50 lakh smart cards. This company is going to print smart cards from August 21 and people are going to get them by Speed Post as earlier.

Raju Ghatole, President of Motor Driving School Owners Association, Maharashtra said, “Like earlier, the printing of smart cards in the RTO should continue. If any change is to be carried out in the smart card, then, what will Puneites do? Pune should not be excluded as it earns maximum revenue for the state government.”
