Pune: Policenama online  – Pune News | The Navratra festival has started from Sunday (October 15) in the country. Thousands of devotees are flocking the Chatuhshrungi Goddess temple since morning. Against this background, let us know the history of the temple from Trustee Nandkumar Angal.(Pune News)

“During the reign of Peshwas, there was a rich businessman Durlabsheth Pitambardas. He was so rich that he used to loan money to the Peshwas during their campaigns. He was a staunch devotee of Saptashrungi Mata, whose temple is located at Vani in Nashik district. He used to visit Vani during both the Navratra of Chaitra and Ashwin Pournima and serve the Goddess. He did this for many years. However, in his old age, he found it impossible to visit Vani.

He was very unhappy as he would not be able to serve the Goddess. The Goddess understood his problem and appeared in his dream. She told him to carry out digging on the hill and told him that an idol would be found. Later, Durlabsheth Pitambardas started digging on the hill and the idol of the Goddess Chatuhshrungi was found on Chaitra Pournima in 1762. A unique feature of the idol is it is tilted on one side like the idol of Saptashrungi Mata.

He said that the Navratra festival is beginning from Sunday and all preparations have been made on a grand scale. Arrangements have been made about the queue facility, CCTV cameras and the security system.
