Pune : Pune Railway Station | In a heartening move towards providing a comfortable and budget-friendly travel experience, Indian Railways has now initiated the provision of cheap meals to passengers. The initiative ensures that travelers are served delectable food at remarkably low prices right in front of the general coaches. This commendable step has been launched at 64 railway stations nationwide, including the bustling city of Pune. Additionally, the Railways has also made drinking water available to passengers at a reasonable cost.

The Railway Board, with its vision of enhancing passenger amenities, mandated all railway departments to offer food at affordable rates. The directive specified that this service should be available on the platform where the general coaches halt at the railway station. As an experimental measure, the service will be run for a duration of six months. To execute this project, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) was entrusted with the responsibility. Acting upon the order, Pune station now offers this facility to travelers. As part of this initiative, railway passengers can now enjoy a wholesome meal priced at a mere 20 or 50 rupees directly on the platform. Additionally, they can avail 200 ml of water for a nominal fee of 2 rupees.

Presently, this valuable facility has been introduced at several railway stations of the Central Railway zone, such as Nagpur, Bhusawal, Manmad, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Khandwa, and of course, Pune. According to Dr. Ramdas Bhise, the Public Relation Officer, this scheme will be extended to more stations in the future, further benefiting travelers.

The meals provided under this scheme cater to various preferences and tastes. For a mere Rs. 20, passengers can relish a sumptuous platter comprising 7 puris (175 gms), potato dry vegetables (150 gms), and pickles (12 gms). For those seeking a heartier breakfast, a 350 gm meal priced at Rs. 50 awaits them, featuring a selection of South Indian Rice, Rajma or Chhole and Rice, Khichdi, Chhole and Bhature or Kulche, Pav Bhaji, or Masala Dosa.

The introduction of this economical meal service is not only a boon for passengers, but it also aligns with the broader vision of making rail travel more inclusive and accessible to all. As a significant mode of transportation for millions of Indians, Railways holds a unique place in the hearts of people. By offering delicious and budget-friendly meals, the railway authorities have taken a significant stride in enhancing the overall travel experience.

The endeavor to provide affordable meals directly on the platform is bound to resonate with the masses.
