Pune Rains | Flooded city roads after two days of rain; crores of rupees spent on building and repairing roads go down the drain

Pune : Pune Rains | Two day’s rain in the city has exposed the faulty construction of roads and storm water drains. Improper road repair has caused flooding of the roads. Crores of rupees spent on storm water drains have gone down the drains.

This has raised a serious question over the civic body’s road repairs. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) spent some hundred crores of rupees to build storm water drains along city roads claiming that this would drain rainwater properly and there would be no flooding of roads.

Roads were dug by the roads department from October last year to lay service lines and to carry out essential works on a large scale. Later, road repairs were undertaken.

While repairing or resurfacing the roads, civic contractors did not take care that the slant of the roads was towards manholes or chambers of these storm water drains. Water is accumulated around them. Hence, water puddles can be seen on roads across the city. In case of heavy rain, pedestrians and commuters will have to bear the brunt of this. Inundated roads point to a lack of storm water drains. Faulty construction of roads is rendering already-built storm water drains useless, resulting in wastage of public money.
