Pune: Pune Rains | The state of Maharashtra is experiencing heavy rainfall in various regions, triggering concerns about landslides and road safety. Authorities have issued red and orange alerts, urging caution and proactive measures to avoid any untoward incidents. In the wake of recent events, the administration has become vigilant and taken the decision to close Varandha Ghat, a crucial route connecting Pune to Konkan.

Varandha Ghat, known for its narrow roads and numerous turns, poses a high risk of landslides, making it unsafe for travel. On the other hand, the Tamhini Ghat route provides a safer alternative to reach Konkan from Pune. To mitigate potential hazards, the administration has decided to close Varandha Ghat for traffic until September 30.

Located at the border of Pune and Raigad districts, Varandha Ghat has been barricaded with mounds of mud to prevent vehicular movement. However, some drivers continue to defy the closure and attempt to navigate through the dangerous terrain, despite repeated appeals from the administration. Such actions not only risk the lives of travelers but also contribute to the possibility of major accidents due to potential landslides.

During the monsoon season, the Ghats witness heavy rainfall, often leading to sudden landslides, tree falls, and road erosion. The safety of commuters is of paramount importance, and to avoid any potential hazards, the administration has taken strict measures. The closure of Varandha Ghat for heavy traffic and light vehicles has been enforced between July 22 and September 30, 2023.

Authorities have issued a stern warning to adhere to these regulations, emphasizing the importance of public safety during this period of heightened risk. Travelers are urged to choose the Tamhini Ghat route as a safe alternative to reach Konkan from Pune.
