New Delhi: Supreme Court On Maharashtra Bull Cart Racing | The Supreme Court (SC) has given its verdict on the bullock cart races in Maharashtra and Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The hearing of pleas on the issue was over in December 2022. The SC had reserved its order in this regard.
The court has finally decided to allow the organisation of the bullock cart races in Maharashtra, Kambala in Karnataka and Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. Animal lovers had filed the petitions before the court arguing that these traditional sports cause a lots of torture to the animals. The top court on Wednesday decided to allow holding these races.
The three states had amended the Wildlife Protection Act to facilitate organisation of these traditional sports. These states had allowed to hold the races. However, this was challenged in the apex court. A detailed hearing was held on the issue. The SC had reserved its verdict in December 2022. Finally, it gave the green signal to these races.
The court has junked the pleas challenging the amendments to the Act by the three states. The SC had decided to ban Jallikattu and similar sports in 2014. Later, the state governments had amended the Act and got them passed in their respective legislatures. Since the top court has permitted them to hold the races, folks in Maharashtra will be able to arrange the famous bullock cart races across the state.
