Pune-Mumbai Rail Traffic | Pune-Mumbai Rail Traffic to be Enhanced with Leveled Routes and New Tunnels in Ghats

Pune: Pune-Mumbai Rail Traffic | A plan is underway to create a new leveled route in the ghat section between Pune-Lonavla-Karjat, which will include the construction of two new routes and several tunnels. The new routes will eliminate the need for trains to slow down or require banking assistance while traveling, leading to smoother rail traffic between Pune and Mumbai and resolving issues caused by cracks. Konkan Railways is currently working on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this project, which will increase the total number of lines in the section to five.

Initially, the organization ‘Rights’ of Railways was tasked with land measurement and other related works for the fourth and fifth lines between Lonavala and Karjat. However, due to the risky nature of the construction work in the ghat section, Central Railway has now assigned the project to Konkan Railway. The DPR report proposed the construction of new tunnels at ten locations, especially in areas prone to cracks. Konkan Railway, known for its expertise in these matters, will now handle the DPR preparation, which is expected to be completed within six months.

The new routes in Lonavla-Karjat, spanning 28 kilometers, will significantly benefit railway transportation. The number of trains can be increased, speeds need not be reduced, banking assistance between Karjat and Lonavala will be unnecessary, and train traffic can be redirected to the other route in the event of landslides or accidents. Moreover, the level nature of the new route will extend the lifespan of the tracks, ensuring minimal impact on passenger services.

The decision to lay two additional lines between Lonavla and Karjat was made due to frequent disruptions caused by landslides during the rainy season, particularly in the challenging uphill journey from Karjat to Lonavala. The attachment of bankers to trains and the constant running of passenger and freight trains has resulted in worn-out tracks and increased accident risks. The survey for the project is currently underway, and final approval from the Railway Board is pending.
