Pune : Pune News | As the monsoon season brings relief from scorching heat, it also ushers in the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Pune, a city in Maharashtra, is currently grappling with a surge in dengue cases, with the first fatality reported this year. The onset of rains has triggered an alarming increase in suspected dengue patients, with 110 individuals under scrutiny and 12 confirmed cases so far in July. The total number of dengue cases this year has reached 582, raising concerns about public health.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has observed a concerning rise in dengue cases since July, marking a departure from the previous months. From January to June, 472 suspected dengue cases were reported, with 21 cases confirming dengue. Notably, all the confirmed cases were identified between January and March, with no diagnoses recorded from April to June. However, the situation has taken a worrisome turn in July, as the number of suspected patients has spiked to 110, resulting in 12 confirmed cases, according to Dr. Suryakant Devkar, Assistant Health Officer of the Municipal Corporation.

Tragically, the first dengue-related fatality of the year has been reported in July, underscoring the urgency of addressing this public health threat. In addition, three cases of chikungunya, another mosquito-borne illness, have been identified so far this year. The Pune Municipal Health Department has intensified efforts to control the outbreak, issuing notices to 54 residential and commercial establishments in July and collecting fines totaling Rs 30,800. Throughout the year, 547 such notices have been issued, resulting in a total fine collection of Rs 1,23,900.

Amidst this concerning situation, it is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to curb the spread of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases. Simple steps can make a significant difference in reducing mosquito breeding sites and minimizing the risk of infection. The Pune Municipal Corporation advises residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean, eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds such as coconut shells and stagnant water in buckets, cover or dispose of unused tires, and regularly change water in coolers and refrigerators.

Furthermore, wearing clothing that covers the entire body can provide an additional layer of protection against mosquito bites. By following these preventive measures and raising awareness within their communities, citizens can contribute to the collective effort to combat dengue and ensure a safer environment for everyone.
