Pune : Pune News | District Guardian Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday pulled up Sassoon Hospital Dean Dr Sanjiv Thakur over the seizure of drugs at the main gate of the hospital and the escape of drug mafia Lalit Patil from the prisoners’ ward. (Pune News)

He sought an explanation from Dr Thakur as to who was responsible for such lapses and raised doubts over the functioning of the hospital administration. Pawar issued a veiled warning that he would have to take stern action in the future.

Many illegal cases have been exposed following the illegal drugs case at the government hospital. Many prisoners were ‘enjoying’ their ‘extended’ stay in the special ward for several months.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reviewed various development works for the first time after taking charge as the District Guardian Minister. He also reviewed the health system in the district. Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, Sassoon Hospital Dean Dr Thakur, District Surgeon Dr Nagnath Yampalle, District Medical Officer Dr Ramchandra Hankare were present.

The meeting was scheduled between 11 am and 12 noon. The review of the health systems in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and the rest of the district was to be done in one hour. As the meeting began, Pawar directed his queries to Sassoon Hospital Dean Dr Thakur. He continued to pull up Dr Thakur for over 25 minutes for the laxities in the hospital administration. He wanted to know as to who was responsible for the incidents at the Sassoon Hospital. However, Dr Thakur tried to put up a feeble defence. Pawar was not happy with his replies. Pawar then read out news published in newspapers. He warned that he would take decisive action.

Action if health services are neglected

It has been decided at the state level to provide additional funds for health services. If needed, the District Planning Committee will also give more funds. Care has to be taken that there is no shortage of medicines in the government hospitals in the district. The number of beds in the municipal hospitals in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will be increased till March 2024. Ultra-modern facilities have been set up in the Sassoon Hospital. Common people should be able to avail them. If the authorities concerned neglect these things, strict action will be taken against them.

The Dean literally runs away

The Guardian Minister reviewed whether treatment was provided to the increasing number of patients; if enough medicines were available; if complicated surgeries were conducted properly; whether manpower was available, etc. After revealing only this much, Sassoon Hospital Dean Dr Thakur refused to divulge any more details and drove away in his car.
