PUNE: Policenama online – Pune News | Senior social activist and reformist from Bohra community Dr Zainab Poonawala passed away due to old age. She was 91 years old. She is survived by daughter vastu expert Shabnam Poonawala and granddaughter Sana Vaidya. Zainab was the widow of Taher Poonawala, who was one of the leaders of liberal and reformist movement in the Bohra community. (Pune News)

Dr Zainab did exceptional work with Taher in the reformist movement of the Bohra community. Hence, the couple was ostracised by the Bohra community. However, they continued with their work. Taher used to always say that he was able to see the bigger picture due to the ex-communication.

The couple actively participated in the activities of Samajik Krutandyata Nidhi, Maharashtra Andhrashaddha Nirmoolan Samiti, People’s Union for Civil Liberty and other organisations. Dr Zainab Poonawala’s mortal remains were kept at SM Joshi Socialist Foundation on Monday morning to allow people to pay their last respects. The Trustee of Samajik Krutandyata Nidhi Dr Baba Adhav, Anwar Rajan, Dr Shamsudduin Tamboli and MLA Siddharth Shirole paid their last respects. Poonawala’s body was donated to the medical college as per her wish.
