Pune, Jan 24 (UNI) – Pune Crime News | The city police has drawn a comprehensive plan to curb activities of ‘koyta’ (sickle) gangs by making a list of 11,000 criminals, a top official said on Tuesday. (Pune Crime News)

For this, a crime unit on the lines of a ‘goonda’ squad has been given powers to curb the growing number of koyta-wielding gangs, additional commissioner of police (Crime) Ramnath Pokale told UNI here.

Due to this, the crime unit at the circle level will be able to monitor the criminals and take action, he said and informed that the list of criminals has been given to all zonal DCPs and police stations with a direction to take immediate action against them.

The list containing the names of 11,000 criminals was prepared by searching the criminal records of last seven years, the official said.

Pokle further said that the criminal background of those criminals who use ‘koyta’ will be investigated and proposed action will be taken against them.

A case under stringent MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) can be filed if the criminal is found to have committed at least two crimes against anybody in past 10 years, he said and pointed that he would then get a punishment of minimum three years of imprisonment in the court of justice.

During the combing operations carried out twice in the limits of Pune Police commissionerate, as many as 80 criminals have been detained for alleged possession of ‘koytas’, he added.
