The contest at Kasba Peth was between Ravindra Dhangekar versus Hemant Rasane. In the 16th round, Dhangekar took a decisive lead which led him to victory. MVA’s candidate Ravindra Dhangekar emerged victorious by 11,000 votes.

The Congress has created history by winning the constituency which was BJP’s stronghold for 28 years. The MVA has scored a big win through Ravindra Dhangekar. Earlier, in the 1992 election, a Congress candidate was elected from Kasba Peth constituency. In 2009, Dhangekar had contested against Girish Bapat but at that time, he had to suffer defeat. However, this time,

Dhangekar benefitted from the anti-BJP sentiment in the constituency. Since Shiv Sena’s symbol and name was allotted to Shinde faction, disgruntled activists of Shiv Sena actively campaigned for Dhangekar. This also proved beneficial for the Congress candidate.

Ravindra Dhangekar had been elected since 25 years from various areas in Kasba Peth constituency. Hence, apart from some areas, Dhangekar has got a good hold in many areas of Kasba Peth constituency. He is also known as the leader of the masses. Hence, it was a foregone conclusion that it would be a hard fought battle between Dhangekar and Rasane. By winning the Kasba Peth bypoll, Dhangekar has snatched the traditional stronghold of the BJP.
