Maharashtra Rains : Many places flooded, houses submerged, 6000 passengers stranded

Mumbai : Policenama onlineMaharashtra Rains | Train services on the Konkan Railway route were affected due to heavy rains and flooding of rivers in Maharashtra, leaving around 6000 passengers stranded. Rail and road traffic has been affected in many other parts of the state including Mumbai due to heavy rains. Due to this the authorities had to call in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist the administration for the rescue work.

Meanwhile, in Kolhapur district of the state, as many as 47 villages were cut off after roads were inundated due to heavy rains and 965 families had to be shifted to safer places. Officials gave this information. They said that two people, including a woman, died in flood water at different places in the district during the rains. So far nine trains have been diverted or cancelled or shortened due to the affected Konkan Railway route.

Major rivers of Konkan region are flowing above the danger mark in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts due to heavy rains and government staff are busy shifting the affected people to safer places. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has reviewed the situation arising in these two coastal districts due to incessant rains. At the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rain for the next three days for the coastal areas. The Chief Minister has directed the officials to remain alert and keep an eye on the water level of the rivers and take people to safer places.

Due to heavy rains, the water level of Vashishti river bridge between
Chiplun and Kamathe stations in Ratnagiri has crossed the danger mark,
the official said. He said that keeping in view the safety of the passengers, train services on this section have been temporarily suspended. According to railway officials, 5,500-6,000 passengers are stuck in trains on the Konkan rail track. Konkan Railway has a 756 km long rail track from Roha near Mumbai to Thokur near Mangalore. The Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka routes are one of the challenging regions, as there are many rivers, valleys and mountains.

An official statement issued by the NDRF said that four of its teams have been deployed in Mumbai,
and one team each in Thane and Palghar districts.
A team will reach Chiplun Nagar in Ratnagiri district in the afternoon.
Some villages in Sahapur taluka of Thane district have been submerged and
local authorities are trying to rescue hundreds of people trapped there with the help of NDRF.
People have been reported trapped in Mumbra, Bhiwandi,
Titwala and Kasara areas of Thane district due to water logging incidents.
There was flooding at other places in Vasai,
Virar and Palghar, but no casualty has been reported so far, officials said.
