Pune Metro: services to be extended till Nigdi; Citizens’ dream to be fulfilled
PIMPRI: Policenama online – Pune Metro | The decks have been cleared for extension of Pune Metro’s services till Bhakti Shakti Chowk at Nigdi. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved the proposal on Monday (October 23). Hence, the dream of citizens of travelling to Nigdi by the metro will be fulfilled. (Pune Metro)
In the first phase, the stretch from Pimpri to Dapodi (7.9 km) had started from August 1, 2023. The Pimpri-Fugewadi stretch had started from March 6, 2022. The citizens had demanded that the work on Pimpri to Nigdi stretch should be started and various agitations were held. Later, the state government gave approval for the extension of the Metro route till Nigdi.
The proposal was pending with the Centre since two years. Finally, Deputy Secretary of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Sunil Kumar has sent a letter to the state government informing it that the proposal of extending the metro route from Pimpri to Nigdi has been approved.
Three stations i.e. Pimpri police station, Khandoba Mal Chowk at Akurdi and Bhakti-Shakti Chowk are proposed on the route. The route is of 4.13 km length and it will be an elevated route. The cost would be equally shared by the Centre and PCMC. It is estimated that the cost will be ₹910.18 crore. Due to this extend stretch, metro service would be available on the 12.50 km main route of Nigdi to Dapodi stretch.
MP Shrirang Barne said, “The city’s population is increasing rapidly. The dream of citizens about metro services till Nigdi will be fulfilled. The metro project would be beneficial for reducing traffic congestion and provide good connectivity for residents of Pimpri Chinchwad.”
