Pune News | Increased Opportunities and Simplified Procedures Lead to Surge in Passport Holders in Pune

Pune : Pune News | In a world that is increasingly interconnected, the desire to explore new horizons, pursue educational opportunities, and seek employment in foreign lands has become more prevalent. As a result, there has been a significant surge in the number of passport holders, fueled by increased opportunities to travel abroad for education and employment, as well as simplified passport procedures. The Pune Regional Passport Office has witnessed a remarkable 35 percent increase in the number of passports issued between January and June this year, compared to the same period last year.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on passport holders cannot be overlooked. In 2020, the number of passport holders witnessed a decline of approximately three lakh due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. Lockdown measures led to the closure of passport offices, and many individuals postponed their plans to obtain passports due to the lack of urgent need. Consequently, only one lakh 65 thousand 185 applications were submitted to the Pune Passport Office in 2020, with 1 lakh 61 thousand 295 passports being distributed.

However, with the gradual easing of restrictions and resumption of international travel, the number of passport holders has once again seen a significant rise. This year, the Pune Regional Passport Office has already distributed 2 lakh 19 647 passports in the first six months, indicating a record increase. The availability of increased appointments at the Passport Seva Kendra has also played a crucial role in facilitating the application process. Additionally, the introduction of Main Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in Pune Division Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Latur, and other districts has further streamlined the passport application process and made it more accessible to individuals residing in different areas.

The Union Ministry of External Affairs has taken steps to simplify the passport application procedure by reducing the number of required documents in recent years. This move has garnered a positive response from the public, dispelling the misconception that obtaining a passport is a challenging task that requires the assistance of agents. The revised process ensures that applicants provide original and valid documents, with accurate details, leading to a more efficient issuance of passports.

Dr. Arjun Devere, the Pune Divisional Passport Officer, has been actively working towards streamlining the passport application process since assuming his position in July 2022. Under his leadership, the Pune Regional Passport Office has increased the number of daily passport appointments to 2500, aiming to minimize delays. Emphasizing the importance of accurate and complete documentation, Dr. Devere ensures that all necessary steps are taken to expedite the passport issuance process, providing applicants with their passports promptly.

The surge in the number of passport holders is a testament to the growing desire for global exploration and the availability of opportunities abroad. As individuals seek to broaden their horizons and engage in international experiences, the simplified passport procedures and increased accessibility to passport services are playing a vital role in facilitating their aspirations.
